作为美国现代主义诗歌的先驱之一，狄金森的诗作篇幅短小，却动人心弦。她一生未婚，在孤独中埋头创作。她的诗歌涵盖了自然、死亡、爱情等多种主题，读来隽永而深刻。

旧时之人，不知科学为何物，一辈子生活在狭隘的幕布之下，他们眼中的世界是天圆地方，是地球中心，是未知的力量统领一切。
而如今，站在巨人的肩膀上，我们冲出了黑暗的铁笼，用理性的视角解读万事万物，我们怎样能想象将生活倒退回昔日朦胧愚昧的时代？
当沐浴在阳光之下时，谁会希冀回归黑暗之中？有了光明，黑暗的寂寞、凄凉与痛苦亦被无限放大。
美国作家房龙在《宽容》一书的前言中讲述了一个故事：
世代居住在“无知谷”里的人们，满足于现世的安稳，无知而闭塞。当勇敢的漫游者开辟了通往全新的世界道路时，却不幸被守旧的人们迫害。
唯有当山谷遭旱，生灵遭难，村民们终于反叛，闯出了狭小的旧天地，来到了新世界的牧场，最终认识到了自身的愚昧和昔日的偏见。
作者以“宽容”为书命名，不过是给人类温馨的提醒：定要以宽容与开放之心态对待新的曙光与萌芽，因为一点点光芒背后也许是阳光普照的新天地。

苏格拉底曾说：未经审视的人生不值得度过。
人最可怕的不是老去，甚至死亡，而是思维的固步自封，是为自身狭小、孤立而片面的认知沾沾自喜，如同庄子所言的蜗角小国，岂不可笑。
只有持续性地接受新鲜的事物，更新自身的认知，方能冲出黑暗之幕，让自己的思想接受阳光的洗礼。
唯有此时，对比今昔，才能意识到往日视野的局限。
当站在更高点俯瞰人生时，对待琐碎的烦恼，弃之如敝屣，心态随着转变；对待重要的选择与行动时，不再随波逐流，有了更清晰的规划。如此，人生才不会虚度。

英文诗一般是讲究押韵的，尤其是每一句的结尾，这有点像中文平仄，但不是那么规则，因为英文单词的音节和汉字的音节大不相同，英文单词大多2个或2个以上音节，而汉字都是一个音节，所以当然是汉语更工整。
